Roma's Knees

Wednesday, February 05, 2014
We met with the veterinary specialist today (ie puppy surgeon) and he confirmed what our vet had said; that Roma's knee has a torn ACL, but there was additional news too...

Vet: "Yes, I definitely see that she has torn her cranial cruciate ligament in both knees... she's barely putting any pressure on either of her back legs and getting most of her support from the front ones."
R&E: "Did you say knees? plural?"
Vet: "Yes, both are torn"
R&E: "Ok, we didn't know that both her knees were bad until right now"

Uggg. So now we're going to have to decide to get the surgery before or after the baby. We're going to call the pet insurance company tomorrow to see if we can get any more coverage specifics to try to help us make the call.

The rehabilitation will take about 3 months total, the first 2 weeks being the most difficult for Roma. She will not be able to be off a leash until she's fully recovered. Oh boy. She's going to get in shape with Mom this summer!

If the doctor hadn't talked us through this x-ray I would have no idea what to look for but he did. Basically the tibia and the fibula have some ligaments that attach in between them, but Miss Roma's is torn, so the bones will eventually slip/rub The x-rays show a build-up of fluid (in between bones, on the top, shown in grey) which means time to do something.

Here's a more in depth read of the type of surgery that Roma will have:

She's been our only baby for the last 6.5 years!
